Kit Size

The most basic thing that you need to consider when buying overhead drum mics is the size of the mic kit. Generally, you should not concern yourself of the size of the kit but how many parts are in fact, included in the kit itself. All kits will have a large dynamic mic which is intentionally used for kick drums. Toms and snares will also be included. Mic Type

There are basically two types used for drums. These are the dynamic mics and the condenser mics. Dynamic mics are used for kick drums, snares, and toms. Hence, they are best placed farther from the drums. Since these mics have higher ranges, they can effectively capture hi-hat and cymbals.

The last thing that you need to consider is the size of the diaphragm. They are apparently smaller in size. They also have a relatively small opening for the sound to get in. Kick drums are larger in size so you need to adapt different sizes to generate specific sounds.
